Damiano Tommasi Biography
Damiano Tommasi was a professional football player who has represented the likes of Roma and Levante in the Italian Serie A. Damiano Tommasi is currently working as the president of the Italian Footballers Association. He was one of the most influential players in the Roma team of 2001, which won the Italian Serie A title that season.
Damiano Tommasi began his career with his hometown club Verona in 1993 and spent three years with the club until 1996. In his three years with Verona, he made a total of 77 appearances and scored four goals in the process. Due to the fact that he was largely used as a protection for the back four, Verona found it tough to extract goals from him. However, he soon became known for his defensive ability, which soon led to the transfer to Italian Serie A Giants Roma.
The capital club came calling in 1996 and Verona found it tough to resist the advancements of the club. In the end, Damiano Tommasi moved to Roma in 1996 and soon established himself as one of the first-team regulars. His debut for Roma came in the match against Piacenza Calcio, and he soon became an influential figure in the side.
Roma won the Italian Serie A title in 2001, and it was largely due to the performances of Damiano Tommasi. It was undoubtedly the peak of his career, which appeared to be coming in to an end after the horrible injury suffered in 2004. A knee injury suffered in the match against Tottenham brought doubts over his career and its continuation. However, after a few long months of absence, Damiano Tommasi finally came back into the first-team fold during the middle of the 2005-06 season.
The comeback with Roma did not last long after it was announced that Damiano Tommasi would be leaving the club at the end of the 2006 season after 10 long years with the club. Damiano Tommasi signed for Spanish club Levante in 2006 and stayed there for two years. He made 44 appearances and scored one goal for Levante. After the relegation of Levante, Damiano Tommasi revealed that he would be leaving the club for English Championship side QPR.
However, he left the English club after just six months and having made only seven appearances by mutual consent. He was one of the better known European players to decide to play in the Chinese League with Tianjin Teda. The 34-year-old Damiano Tommasi represented Tianjin Teda in 29 matches before bringing his one-year stay with the club to an end. He returned to Italy with Sant’Anna d’Alfaedo, a club for which he has made 10 appearances and scored two goals.
Damiano Tommasi has represented the Italian national team at various stages during his professional career. In total, he made 25 appearances for the Italian national team, which also includes the appearances in the 2002 World Cup. He has won the Serie A and the Supercoppa Italiana titles once during his career.
